Br. James Casey
James Casey was born in Lanesboro, County Longford, in 1929. He was the oldest of 7 children, 4 girls and 3 boys. Originally he intended to join the White Fathers but then changed his mind and joined the Redemptorists instead. He entered in Galway in 1947.
He later moved to our Limerick Monastery where he did his noviciate. In November 1949, he made his final profession. In that same year, his first appointment, as a professed Brother, was to Esker. Later he went to Galway for 7 years. After a stint in the West of Ireland he moved to our Limerick Monastery. Then it was time to cross the Border to Belfast where he spent 5 years. This was followed by a transfer to Dundalk for 17 years. Finally in 1987 he was appointed to Esker where he has taken root.
Bro. James’ main ministries were reception, finance and assistant bursar and lots of other ministries too. In fact he was an all-rounder and wherever there was a gap, Bro. James was called to fill it.
During his 17 years in Dundalk, he was instrumental, with Bro. Senan Forrie, in launching St.Gerard’s Youth Club. It was very successful and helped in no small way in catering for the youth of Dundalk. There were more than 200 members and it lasted for over seven years.
He helped in the church distributing Holy Communion, blessing with the relic of St.Gerard and giving out the rosary at the Evening Devotions.
The paths around the Dundalk monastery grounds were infested with slugs which made walking there uncomfortable, to say the least. But the superior of the time heard that the answer lay in introducing ducks and they would quickly solve the problem. Alas! The cure was worse than the disease and the ducks only added to the problem. Drastic action had to be taken! Some weeks later one of the community noticed that the ducks had vanished from the grounds - where to? He was informed by the cook that the community had eaten them for dinner over the previous few days.
Bro. James is semi-retired now. His hobbies are traditional music and golf. He is an accomplished bodhrán player.
