Fr. Mike Heagney

Mike Heagney was born in Gortanumera, Portumna in 1936, the youngest of six. He came in contact with the Redemptorists during a mission in 1948 and went to the Redemptorist College in Limerick in 1950. From there he entered the Novitiate in Esker and was professed  in 1956. His studies in preparation for priesthood were in Cluain Mhuire Galway where he was ordained in January 1963. After a year of Pastoral studies in Limerick, he was appointed to the Philippines in July of 1964.

He was among the last of our foreign missioners to travel by ship and the trip took about 5 weeks. It was all so new! The people were different, the climate was different, the culture was different, the language was different, the food was different. It was a complete change. It was a far cry from life back in Ireland and Gortunumera! There was a lot to be got used to!

He spent 25 years in the Philippines, 17 in Iloilo City and 8 in Bacolod City. Once after a mission in a barrio (parish) he was waiting at the side of the road for a lift back to the monastery. He began to sniffle as he had a bad cold. The people thought he was crying at leaving them and they all began to cry too.  He became involved in the Family Life Apostolate and to this day he is fondly remembered by the families involved.

When he returned to Ireland in 1989, he was asked to help in the Novitate in Dundalk. Four years later he was appointed to Galway and did missions and Sisters Retreats in the west of Ireland for four years. In 1997 he was appointed to the Limerick Community. His reputation  for figures (the mathematical kind)  went before him and so he was given the job of handling the finances there.  Besides being good in financial matters Fr. Mike was an astute adviser too.

In 2002 he joined the Esker Community and, lo and behold, he is immersed in the finances of this Community now.
