Retreats for teenagers and young people. A fun, enlightening and enriching time for all.

Esker Youth Village came about as a development of old abandoned farm buildings.  In 1993 there was the beginning of a plan to demolish these buildings because they were such an eye-sore.  Instead, thanks to the vision of some and the very generous work of many others we now have a facility of which we are truly proud.  These old buildings are now a dining room, a chapel, two dormitories, three meeting rooms, a Taize prayer space.

Sometimes people think of a retreat as a very serious affair.  of course there are serious aspects to it.  but there is a lot of fun as well.  Come and see!

Prayer space

One of the most popular things on most of our retreats is the meditation time in this beautiful Prayer Space.  Why not try it out?

Every summer children from Chernobyl and Belaurus visit the Esker Youth Village.

The Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal also takes children from Belarus to stay at Esker Youth Village, Esker, Athenry, Co. Galway with their translators and voluntary workers from the locality. The children have a most memorable month, where they enjoy the excellent care, sleeping and dining facilities and beautiful grounds of Esker Monastery, which includes walks, pitch and putt course, playing fields and games rooms.

The children are facilitated in every way by transport companies, local individuals, hotels and businesses who provide donations, services or goods, dentists, doctors, opticians, gardaí, fire services, civil defence, volunteers and the kind people of Athenry and Co. Galway.

A most enjoyable Fun Day is held at the Youth Village for the Chernobyl Children, which is attended by the general public and families hosting Chernobyl Children with The Sunflower Chernobyl Appeal volunteers from around counties Galway and Roscommon.

We provide the facilites and the dedicated local volunteers look after the Children’s every need. This is a very worthwhile project, as the Children return home refreshed and full of many happy memories.
